Help to ease a hangover

Help to ease a hangover

We usually enjoy our night out of partying and having fun. Unfortunately, the next day doesn't always feel so great. You know the old saying "You play, you pay". We shouldn't have to pay too high of a price though for having a little fun in life.

If you are feeling the ill effects of a hangover, try to eat some honey. The fructose in honey may help your body metabolize alcohol more quickly, so consider a spoonful of it you have overdone it.

Help with relieving tension headaches

Help with relieving tension headaches

Anyone who suffers from tension headaches know that they are really uncomfortable. Try holding a bag of frozen peas on the throbbing area for 10 minutes. It makes a great reusable ice pack. The cold constricts blood vessels. This helps to ease the pain.

Help to soothe a mild burn

Help to soothe a mild burn

Cut an onion in half and place it on the spot until the pain subsides. Onion juice contains sulfur compounds and other plant chemicals that are ingredients in many over the counter burn treatments. Your burn may be replaced by watery eyes. Most would rather have watery eyes from the onion though and not have burning feeling.

Avoid scars from cuts

Avoid scars from cuts

We all get cuts from time to time and definitey don't want scars left on our body from those cuts. Here are some tips to avoid scars from cuts.

Treat a fresh cut with mild soap and water. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or any treatment containing alcohol. Although both of these kill bacteria, they also kill healthy cells that repair skin. This makes you more likely to scar. Never apply vitamin E to an open cut. This will slow healing. Use a medicated ointment such as neosporin than cover the cut with a band-aid. Do this for about five days until the cut scabs. Once a scab forms, bring out the vitamin E. At night, squeeze on some vitamin E and massage it in. This stimulates blood flow to speed up healing. It also helps skin grow back more evenly. Keep this up for 3 months. It takes approximately three months for a wound to fully heal. Be aware that it could take up to a year for any raised or discolored skin to disappear.

If the cut is on your face or neck, don't use any skin care products containing retinoids or any exfoliants until it's healed. Regardless of where your scab is, don't scrub or pick at it. This can leave a scar. Let it fall off naturally, then treat the skin with a product such as scaraway. This contains a silicone that hydrates and repairs scar tissue, which, in turn, softens and fades the mark. They also help relieve itching. Protect the area from sun also. Sun can make the discoloration worse.

Recognizing a stroke

Recognizing a stroke

Stroke has a new indicator! Read and pass on....

Stroke has a new indicator They say if you share this with ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life.. Will you send this along? Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

I will continue to share this everytime I see it!
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.....
S. T. R.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and
Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A
SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. Chicken Soup)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency numberimmediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke --------
Stick out Your Tongue!

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is
'crooked', if it goes to one side or the otherthat is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this shares it with 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Should you get a mammogram?

Should you get a mammogram?

I actually hear women ponder this question and it befuddles me. The actual question should be "Why shouldn't you get a mammogram"?

In the past 2 years, 4 of my colleagues and 3 of my friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Yes, 5 of the 7 had to have both breasts removed while the other 2 just had to have a lumpectomy. One of them will probably end up dying from the cancer as it has spread to other parts of her body and she is in very bad shape right now. One of them had almost stage 4 and nearly died. Luckily though, after two years of strong chemo and radiation, her pet scan did come back clear recently. She beat cancer. It can be done. I watched it. We work together so I watched her daily fight and it was heartbreaking to say the least.

The other ones had gotten their annual mammograms and the cancer was caught early enough that it did not spread to other parts. They are doing well now. A mammogram is not comfortable but only really takes about ten minutes. I hear so many people say that they don't have time. My least favorite phrase in society today. It's amazing how we have time to play on the internet for long periods of time but not the time to do something that could save our life.

Mammograms save lives. Technology is so advanced that finding breast cancer early reduces mortality. That's a fact. I have been getting annual mammograms since I was 30 (due to my mother had breast cancer when she was 32). The doctor wanted me to start early because of that. Most women don't start until they are 40.I wouldn't recommend that. If your doctor OKs it, start in your 30's. Again, it's a very quick procedure that you can make time for it. I would rather take a half hour a year to get it done than to not catch it in time and have to undergo the 2 years of pure hell that I just watched my co-worker go through.

Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. It is so important.

Productive days don't include skipping breakfast

Productive days don't include skipping breakfast

Our bodies have a biological expectation of a morning meal. When you skip breakfast, your body gets confused and thinks your starving. This decreases your metabolic rate and makes it harder to burn calories throughout the day. You also usually end up eating more calories at lunch. A good breakfast that includes fiber helps you eat fewer empty snacking calories thoughout the day. It also helps ensure that you have enough energy and ability to concentrate.

What is Dry Eye?

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is an irritating condition that has millions of women rubbing their eyes. Itchy, burning or scratchy eyes, sometime accompanied by blurred vision or tearing are symptoms of dry eye. About 50% of American adults occasionally suffer dry eye syndrome, which is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. If dry eye is left untreated, it can lead to infection and even loss of vision.

Dry eye has many causes. Some of them are as follows:
* Exposure to blasting heat, air conditioning, or cold wind.
* Spending hours in front of a computer.
* Eating spicy foods.

To keep your eyes lubricated, your tears must include adequate amounts of meibum, an oily substance that prevents tears from evaporating quickly.

Though many health conditions can cause dry eye, meibomian gland related issues are the most common.

Some treatments for dry eye are as follows:
* Blinking exercises- When you stare at a computer screen for long periods of time, you blink less often. This can lead to dry eye. Meibum is produced every time you blink. Force yourself to blink often at least twice every 5 or 10 minutes.
* Eye Yoga- Move the eyes up and down, from side to side and in circles.
* Eye massage- Massaging your upper and lower eyelids can keep meibomian glands flowing. This is a simple exercise that involves rolling yoru finger or a cotton swab in small circles around each eyelid.

Did you know that drinking a cup of caffeinated coffee can stimulate your eye nerves to significantly increase moisture production within 45 minutes?

Hope this helps

Do you really have a yeast infection?

Do you really have a yeast infection?

Vaginal yeast infections are extremely common. Almost 75% of women will get at least one. Most women tend to self-diagnose and self-treat what they think are yeast infections. Let's face it. We get busy and unfortunately, that makes going to the doctors somewhat inconvenient. You should know though that at-home assessments are wrong 70% of the time. In many cases, the symptoms (itching, burning and vaginal discharge) are actually caused by bacterial vaginosis, which is more serious than an actual yeast infection. These need to be treated with prescription medications.

To make the most accurate diagnosis at home, use an OTC yeast infection test such as a vagisil screening kit. This kit measures PH levels after you press a wand against your vaginal wall for approximately 5 seconds. If your PH is above the normal range, you may have bacterial vaginosis and you should really see your doctor. If it's positive, you can usually treat with Monistat. This should be avoided though if you are pregnant or are prone to yeast infections. In those cases, you definitely need to see your doctor

Are your kids bringing home a lot of germs from school

Are you kids bringing home a lot of germs from school?

Do you ever feel like once the kids go back to school that the germ run rapidly into your home? Don't worry. Your kids may actually keep you healthy. Studies show that parents are less likely than childless adults to catch colds. The germs that your children bring home help to actually build your immune system stronger.

Exercise and meditation can also help, because you are putting less stress on your immune system.

Waking up during the night with bad leg cramps

Waking up during the night with bad leg cramps

Leg cramps while sleeping are usually harmless but a chronic case could mean that you are lacking potassium, calcium or magnesium. A banana is a good source of potassium but you should also take a vitamin supplement. Just taking one multi-vitamin a day could help tremendously with leg cramps at night.
